Guildford man sentenced to three years and four months in prison for Grayshott burglary
Mark Leonard Chatfield, 41, of Epsom Road, West Clandon, appeared at Guildford Crown Court on 31 May and pleaded guilty to the charge of burglary at a house in Grayshott in January 2017. He was sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
Two men broke into the house on the Headley Road around 1pm on 31 January 2017. As the home owner returned, she heard noises at the side of the house and saw two men run across the Headley Road into a nearby cul-de-sac.
Following reports of the intruders having been on the premises, a swift response followed from neighbourhood officers, including a Community Support Officer. Key CCTV evidence was provided from a house nearby which tracked the vehicle used by the two men to escape. This vehicle was then located the following day, near to where Chatfield was also detained. Forensic evidence discovered in the same vehicle was found to connect to the burgled home.
Detective Constable Richard Pegden, who led the investigation, said: "Chatfield was identified just metres from the scene of his crime thanks to a prompt response by Surrey officers. The evidence which was quickly obtained by the officers first on the scene, led to this prolific burglar pleading guilty to this burglary.”
DC Pegden added: "I would also like to commend the home owner for her quick actions, during what must have been a traumatic incident for her.”
Further enquiries are currently on-going in relation to the second man involved in this case.
