Officers investigating the discovery of a man’s body in Woodham have issued CCTV images of people they would like to come forward.

The body was found yesterday morning (Saturday 15 July) in the Basingstoke Canal at Woodham Lock (between Woodham and West Byfleet) by a member of the public. The body has not been formally identified, though officers believe they know who he is and have informed his family.

Detective Superintendent Jason Tingley said:

“The people in these CCTV images were in the area of the lock or the canal path early on Saturday morning. I want to be clear that they are not under suspicion, but may have seen or heard something that could help our investigation. If you are one of these people, or you know who they are, please call us on 101 immediately.

“We are keen to speak with anyone who may have used the Basingstoke Canal towpath (Saturn trail) at Woodham Lock; or used the lock bridge to cross the canal between West Byfleet station and Woodlands Avenue, and Faris Lane, or the footpath to Fulbrook School; between midnight and 9am on Saturday 15 July.

“We also want to speak to anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious in the area at those times, or who may have any other information that could help us."

Anyone with information which could assist the investigation is asked to contact Surrey Police immediately on 101, quoting 45170076698. Alternatively you can share information anonymously with the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Officers continue to carry out enquiries to understand the circumstances that led to the body being in the lock.

Woodham Lock is frequently used by school children and commuters travelling between West Byfleet and Woodham, and we’d ask anyone who was expecting to use this route tomorrow morning to consider alternative routes.
