Surrey Police staff and officers celebrated at commendations ceremony

01 Dec, 2017 16:31 News

The Chief Constable's Commendations took place on Thursday, 30 November at Guildford Cathedral. Officers and staff were recognised for their bravery, professionalism and long service with the Force.

From saving a vulnerable adult from the icy waters of the River Thames, to a successful international arrest as part of an operation to safeguard children against online grooming, we are incredibly proud to be commending both individuals and teams for their dedication to policing work and safeguarding the community.

Particular note goes to Tony Grant who celebrates a Recognition of Long Service Award for 50 years with the Force. Tony joined us in 1967 as a Police Constable, and in 1998 became a Criminal Justice Strategy Unit Manager in Guildford where he still works today.

Congratulations also go to DS Nicky Gardner, DC Paul Harris, DC Richard Ashton, Michelle Tyrrell and Vernon Jones for their tenacity in investigating and subsequently charging an individual in Romania for online grooming offences. Particular commendation goes to Michelle from the National Crime Agency, as without her support the suspect may never have been convicted. The perpetrator is now behind bars for 19.5 years.

Fantastic work from PC Cheryl Williams and PC John Williams resulted in a vulnerable female receiving timely mental health support following a suicide attempt in Walton-on-Thames. Upon seeing police, the female jumped twenty feet into the River Thames. Fearing for the female’s safety, Cheryl bravely entered the water from Walton Marina, and swam with the resistant female to safety where she was detained under S136 of the Mental Health Act and transported to hospital to receive the care she needed. John is also acknowledged for the continuous support shown for his colleague and the vulnerable female by remaining composed and calm throughout. Congratulations to you both on your bravery and quick thinking to safeguard a vulnerable person.

Commendations and Police Long Service and Good Conduct Awards were also awarded to:

PC Jonathan Payne

PC Richard Balchin
