A 67-year-old man will spend 17 years behind bars for raping and sexually assaulting a child between 1998 and 2000.

Graham Ward, of Abbey Road in Woking, appeared at Kingston Crown Court on Thursday 9 February after being found guilty of one count of rape, three counts of indecent assault and two counts of gross indecency involving a young girl aged 6-9 years old.

Investigating Officer Detective Constable Anna Blanco from Safeguarding Investigation Unit, said: “Ward took advantage of the trust given to him by the victim’s family by manipulating and inciting a young child to engage in sexual activity with him.”

Detective Constable Becky Thomson from Surrey Police Safeguarding Investigation Unit, said: “I would like to commend the victim for reporting this to the police and for the strength and courage she has shown throughout the whole process.

“I hope this outcome gives her the closure she so dearly deserves.”
